Abstract:
A great deal of work on emotional labour has confirmed the impact of deep and surface acting (strategies of EL) on burnout (Bazińska et al., 2010). According to Maslach et al. (2001), the discrepancy between personal and organizational values may also result in a deep level of burnout. The aim of the present study was to investigate if values congruence moderates the effects of emotional labour on burnout. The study sample consisted of 211 participants from different organizations. Personal values, emotional labour strategies and burnout were estimated, as well as estimation of the match between personal and organizational values. Values and estimation of values congruence were assessed with the use of a method created for the present study. Results indicate a negative correlation between values congruence and burnout. Finally, interaction analyses showed that as value congruence decreased, surface and deep acting had stronger influence on depersonalization. The effect occurred only in the case of the most important work value. In general, results demonstrated how the values congruence may influence emotional labour process. Findings indicate also that the quality of values does not play significant role in predicting the level of emotional labour strategies and burnout.
